OUTLINE:
The Competition will be held at the Tir Mara A&S and Heavy List Championships, on October 9th 2010, in the Shire of Lyndhaven
see: http://www.eastkingdom.org/event-detail.html?eid=1992
The competition is open to anyone who is a resident of Tir Mara.
Artisans may enter in absentia, but a proxy must be nominated who is
prepared to present the work.
The new champion will be expected to encourage the Arts and Sciences
in Tir Mara, and see to the running of the competition to find their
successor.
ENTRIES:
Each artisan should submit a single entry, being a single item, or collection of related items that can be judged as a single entry. It must have been completed within the last 2 years (i.e. since the last regional arts and sciences championship). Entries that have previously won a regional or kingdom championship cannot be entered.
Pure research papers are not allowed. Performance entries should
have a large component of original work (e.g. a new composition in a
period style).
Artisans who plan to enter the competition should inform Guthfrith by
October 1. His email is asimpso2@dal.ca
Important: Entries must be submitted on the day of the event by 1pm.
DOCUMENTATION:
Written documentation is required for all entries. The main written
text must not exceed three pages in 12 point font. References,
figures etc. may be on additional pages.
For judging purposes an English version of the documentation will be needed. If your documentation is in French, and it is not convenient for you to arrange your own translation, please submit it in electronic form to the Guthfrith by October 1, so that he can arrange for a translation to be made. Guthfrith's email is asimpso2@dal.ca . Please also bring the French version of your documentation to the event!
Translation of English documentation into French is also encouraged.
JUDGING:
The judges will be members of the Order of the Laurel. If insufficient Laurels are available to serve, the current or past A+S champions, the Prince and Princess, or landed Barons and Baronesses of the Principality may be requested to act as judges.
Judges will be marking the entries according to the following criteria:
The last criterion, "Originality or novel artistic value", is a bonus
to reward entries that represent meritorious artistic input by the
artisan, or display a novel, or rarely-used, art or science (or a
novel application of an art and science): For example, an
artistically excellent portrait of Her Royal Highness, the Princess,
in the style of Leonardo da Vinci would certainly score the bonus
point, whereas a reproduction of the Mona Lisa would not. A replica
of a pilgrim badge in cast pewter would not score (pewter casting is a
very well-established art and science in the SCA, and here used in a
typical context), whereas an acid-etched piece of armour probably
would score (especially if the design were novel and artistically
meritorious).
